The Territory
The Barbaresco DOCG production area is one of the most prestigious and geographically defined in Italy, situated in the north-eastern part of the Langhe, within the municipalities of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, and in a small portion of the municipality of Alba, specifically the hamlet of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. The appellation covers a very limited total area under vine (around 800 hectares) and is divided into 66 Additional Geographical Mentions (MGAs), which identify the individual crus and the most highly regarded historic sub-zones. The predominance in the soil of the so-called Sant’Agata Fossili marls – calcareous clay formations rich in marine fossils and sand – give rise to wines with pronounced elegance, aromatic finesse and a dense tannic structure.
