The Territory
The municipalities of Verduno and Novello are situated at the two opposite geographical ends (to the north and south-west respectively) of the Barolo DOCG area. Both are renowned for producing Barolos characterised by elegance and expressive finesse, yet with profoundly different aromatic and structural nuances. Verduno, situated on the northernmost edge of the appellation, is influenced by the River Tanaro, with soils characterised by calcareous clay marls, veined with gypsum, which give rise to harmonious wines with very pronounced spicy notes, complemented by floral and balsamic notes. Novello, on the other hand, is situated in the south-western part of the area, perched on a rocky outcrop between the municipalities of Barolo and Monforte d’Alba. Its hills are characterised by notable elevations and soils of marine sedimentary origin – calcareous and clayey – with a notable presence of heavy clays and layers of sand, which give the wines extraordinary ageing potential. Unlike Verduno, Barolo from Novello displays a more solid and substantial structure, underpinned by a lively freshness and a tannic texture that is distinct yet perfectly integrated. The bouquet is deep and evolves over time, starting with aromas of small red fruits and developing into elegant notes of tobacco, liquorice, menthol nuances and traces of citrus
