The Territory
Monforte d’Alba is one of the most historic and, in terms of production, one of the most significant municipalities within the entire Barolo DOCG appellation, situated on the extreme south-eastern edge of the production area. Its vineyards lie on the area’s oldest geological formations (the Elvezian or Lequio Formation). The soils consist of very compact calcareous clay marls, rich in sandstone-derived sands and iron. This soil composition, combined with high altitudes that often exceed 400 metres, gives the wines a unique structural solidity and pronounced acidity. This full-bodied Barolo embodies the highest expression of this wine’s power, structure and extraordinary longevity; it is dense and austere, particularly in its youth. On the nose, it offers deep, dark aromas of morello cherry, tar, liquorice, tobacco and leather. On the palate, it is characterised by a vigorous body, a very high extract and a dense, rigorous tannic structure, which requires several years of bottle ageing to soften and reveal its regal complexity.
